Kolkata: Digha Jagannath Mandir Prasad Distribution Begins in Kolkata: 400 Houses in Bhowanipore Receive First Packets
Ward 70 councillor Ashim Bose personally delivered the sacred prasad from Digha Jagannath Mandir to Satyajit Ray’s Bishop Lefroy Road residence, where director Sandip Ray and his wife Lalita Ray warmly received the packet containing traditional sweets ‘gaja’ and ‘pera’. This event marked the official start of the Jagannath Mandir prasad distribution in Kolkata.
The initial rollout focused on Bhowanipore, the constituency of CM Mamata Banerjee, where approximately 400 homes were blessed with the prasad, according to administrative sources.
Biswambar Basu of the All India Fair Price Shop Dealers Association mentioned that the distribution is expected to accelerate starting Sunday. “While our teams are active across the state, the primary emphasis remains on Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), and New Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) areas,” said Basu. Despite ration shops being closed on Monday, the distribution process will continue uninterrupted.
Councillor Ashim Bose shared plans to distribute up to 9,000 prasad packets swiftly. “Dedicated teams are ready to cover all blocks in my ward area,” he stated.
One of the early recipients, Konark Mukherjee, expressed his excitement: “I have been eagerly waiting for the prasad for the past two days and plan to visit the temple soon. The souvenir picture of the Jagannath Temple in Digha included in the packet is a thoughtful touch.”
Local sweet makers from each block and municipal area have been assigned to prepare the ‘pera’ and ‘gaja’ sweets. Each prasad packet has a budget allocation of Rs 20. To maintain sanctity, a portion of the main offering from the Jagannath Temple in Digha is blended into the sweets before packaging and distribution.
