India’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma revisited one of the most unforgettable moments from the final against South Africa in Barbados — Suryakumar Yadav’s sensational boundary catch to dismiss David Miller. Calling it the “moment of the match,” Rohit revealed the intense emotions he experienced during that critical turning point.
“Surya was at long-off. That catch — honestly, it changed everything,” Rohit told JioHotstar. “Even after he caught it, the umpires checked if he had touched the rope. Everyone’s heart was in their mouth. From long-on, I saw it all. It looked like a six — until Surya flew in and pulled off that blinder. The wind helped, too.”
Recounting the tense few moments while the third umpire reviewed the catch, Rohit said, “I stood right next to him. I asked him, and he said, ‘I think I’ve caught it.’ The zoom camera showed no rope movement — which gave us hope. But until the big screen confirmed it, we couldn’t relax.”
The triumph was especially significant as it marked the end of coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure. “Rahul bhai wanted to step down after the 2023 ODI World Cup, but we asked him to stay. I’m so glad he did. I’m sure he feels the same now,” Rohit shared.
On a personal note, Rohit called the 2024 title win a full-circle moment. “My cricket journey began with the 2007 T20 World Cup. To win it again in 2024 meant everything.”
Discussing India’s semi-final win over England, Rohit highlighted the team’s mindset shift post-2022. “The 2022 loss hurt. But it taught us. We changed our approach and were more prepared this time.”
He emphasized the importance of powerplay wickets. “Buttler and Salt are dangerous. Getting them early was crucial. Once they were out, we controlled the game with spin. Kuldeep, Axar, and Jaddu bowled brilliantly.”
India’s historic win not only ended an ICC trophy drought but also capped off a remarkable journey of belief, redemption, and composure under pressure.
