Click India Desk: India’s evacuation efforts from Iran intensified over the weekend as tensions in the region escalated. By Saturday evening, 827 Indian nationals had returned home, with officials expecting the total to exceed 1,100 by midnight, thanks to a special flight bringing in another 300 evacuees.
Government sources confirmed that 600 more Indians are scheduled to arrive on Sunday via two separate flights. At the onset of the latest Iran-Israel conflict, there were approximately 10,000 Indian nationals in Iran, including 6,000 students.
“About 800 Indians have now registered with the embassy for evacuation and are expected to return on Monday and Tuesday via government-coordinated flights,” said an official source.
In a significant humanitarian gesture, the Indian government has also extended evacuation assistance to citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka. The Indian Embassy in Tehran posted on X (formerly Twitter), “On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian embassy’s evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka.”
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba publicly thanked India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for the swift support. “India’s assistance in evacuating Nepali nationals is a reflection of the deep ties between our countries,” she wrote on X.
Earlier on Saturday, a Mahan Air evacuation flight carrying 256 Indian students, most of them from Jammu & Kashmir, arrived at Delhi airport. The J&K Students’ Association expressed gratitude to the Indian government for its timely coordination with Iranian authorities. “We remain committed to ensuring the safe return of all remaining students, especially those from vulnerable and remote areas,” the association said in a statement.
India continues to monitor the situation in the region closely and remains committed to evacuating all its citizens who wish to return.
