Click Hind, Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday strongly condemned Bengal BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar for his controversial remarks comparing the state police force to sex workers in Sonagachhi, Kolkata’s red-light district. A video surfaced showing Majumdar accusing the police of lowering law enforcement standards, which TMC termed as “deeply disrespectful and demeaning.”
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh criticized the BJP leader for his “insensitive and uninformed” comments, highlighting that sex workers are among the most marginalized and exploited communities and deserve dignity, not ridicule. Ghosh added that Majumdar, despite his academic background and ministerial role, had displayed a lack of empathy and awareness, demanding that he issue a public apology.
Echoing this sentiment, State Women and Child Development Minister Shashi Panja slammed Majumdar’s repeated “derogatory” remarks toward women and sex workers, calling his language “hurtful and unacceptable.” While the BJP officially remained silent, party spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya deflected criticism, bringing up TMC’s internal controversies instead. The remarks have sparked a fresh political storm, with demands for accountability and greater sensitivity in public discourse, especially from elected representatives.
